OBS Engine Tear Down (PIC HEAVY)

Alright guys,

figured I'd throw this up on here since its been awhile since I had a good thread over here. I also took a lot of pics and I know how badly everyone loves pics.

About a week ago I picked up a engine out of a 95. I know it has been rebuilt once, and most recently it was pulled out of a buddies truck, taken to a local mechanic for a "rebuild" because it ran away on my buddy and supposedly needed new piston rings. It never started up after this mechanic worked on it, my buddy (after 8 months) ended up just buying another motor, and wanted to get rid of this one, so I got a KILLER deal on it.

Anyways, here are the pics..

Got it all mounted up on the stand today. Working by myself made it a bit hard to get it completely square on the stand...

Here is how the engine looks on the stand, it is a complete grimey oiley ****ty mess...

I'll take some better pics of how bad the sludge build up on it is when I get some more time to get some of it gone...Started by pulling the fuel bowl and mechanical pump...if anyone knows anyone that wants or needs either part let me know, its theirs for shipping. Next I pulled the HPOP res and HPOP, gotta clean the HPOP up and send it off to Joey... Look what I found when I removed the res....

HOLY RTV!!!! who wants to take the bet that at least part of the problem is RTV stuck in the HPOP or IPR...

Underside of the Res...

Anyways, thats all for today as far as that engine goes....did that while my coolant was draining so I could swap my water pump....

So far I have all injectors removed, cleaned the engine down a bunch, pulled LPOP, and pulled the Water Pump. Waiting on everyone's comments before I pull the heads and flip the motor and pull the pan. I've been debating on whether or not I want to pull the heads off, but given what I've seen so far, I kind of want to pull the heads off and strip this motor all the way down. As Bryan pointed out, gaskets are cheap compared to not knowing what exactly has been done. After seeing some of the work that this guy did on this motor, I feel like I need to tear it apart completely to see if he did ANYTHING the correct way and not half assed.

That being said, lets get on to the pics...

(I'm just gonna upload all of the ones I have, sorry if you dont have a good connection, theres a TON of them)

Popped the VC's, I have individual pics of all the injectors if anyone spots anything strange, but I'm not gonna clog up this thread with all of them.

Drivers side

A mix of injectors, assuming this is just because they were reman supposed stage 1's. Guess Evan is gonna sell them to a kid whos gonna send them off to be gone through, I was kinda hoping he'd sell them to Mike so that we could all find out what was wrong with them.

More unneeded RTV....Seriously starting to think that Grey RTV is to Peurto Rican's what Duct Tape is to Rednecks...

Pulled the Harmonic Balancer, came off really easy with the Impact...

Pulled the LPOP

Pulled the Oil Rail Plugs to verify that there was no RTV in the rails...

Here are the pics from when I removed the heads....More of the same...also guessing the soot and discoloration is from ether/starting fluid in the guys attempt to get the thing to start...

Thanks Alan.

Looking for a good machine shop that knows what they are doing with these engines and going to hopefully just get it honed and cleaned up. Then balance the rotating assembly, get the pistons machined, and rods cryoed, probably throw a rebuild kit on it and keep it as a spare.

Just realized I had a double post earlier.... heres the post that I meant to have in there.

I pulled the pan, front cover, and heads...here is what it looked like...

Got the pan off to find this little beauty...

Pulled the pick up foot, and unless I'm wrong it was missing an O-Ring where it attaches to the front cover...

Here are some various shots of the Crank

The 94.5-95 have a different front cover then the 96-03
The 94.5-95 have a check valve (anti drain back)built into the hpop. If it was lost then it will never start.

There also two more check valves built into the oil filter head on the oil cooler. If one of them fail out it won't start

Mike,

In the pic of the front cover, do you see said check valve? I did not see it, but also not POSITIVE on where I'm looking or where it should be.

Other question I have, can anyone tell if this is for sure a 95 front cover vs the later years front cover? I know the engine has been rebuilt before, so I just want to verify that the front cover is the original

Square hole on the left should have a check vale in it coming from the mounting side
Round hole on the right should have a valve to

Round hole with valve
