It matters during reinstallation. Put the locating dowel at 12'oclock, and turn the engine over by hand using the nut on the harmonic balancer before you use the starter to oil prime it. Reason being I think Mike said setting the crank there means no cylinder is at TDC.
Additionally, I would advise you to rotate the crankshaft by hand 2 full revolutions after each head is back on.
Tighten the studs to maybe 70 ft-lbs, then rotate crank by hand. If all is okay, then go thru your torque sequence.
YOU DO NOT WANT TO WAIT FOR THE STARTER TO DO THIS!!
I did headstuds/gaskets and a new front cover gasket last week on mine.
I did the passenger side first, then driver's side. When I rotated the crank by hand there was an obstruction. Turns out one of the push rods wasn't against a valve bridge correctly - and I didn't see it. I think it was pushing the valve too far down. Took the head and everything back off, checked and everything looked good, and reinstalled.
Rotated the crank by hand it went around twice with no issues. I then wiped a huge bead of sweat off my forehead.
Listen to what they are saying. I did not locate the dowel to the correct position and I'm having alot of problems now. I think I'm going to have to buy the rocker arm tool at $200 and diasemble all of my rocker arms to see which push tubes are bent or installed incorectly.
Help? I can not find a locating mark of any sort on the balancer. I did not pull the front end to do the heads, so it is very tight in there. I have rotated the crank by hand at least six times to make sure the valves are working correctly, no binding at all detected.
Now just want to position the crank in the correct spot.
there is a locating pin on the front of the crank its a small dowel pin.
the key is to make suere no piston is up durring assembly to prevent damage, how ever its a gear to gear timing setup so its pretty hard to screw that up.
