I know this was probably covered before, but does anyone have any tips for a install of a CD player in a 2002 Explorer? I just got the truck and I know little about it. My main question is dash disassembly or is that not necessary. Thanks everyone
On most newer cars and trucks, the trim around the radio area should just come off by gently pulling on it. This usually exposes the screws that you need to remove to remove the factory radio. If you are putting in an after market HU you need to get an install kit. It has all the parts you need to install a radio. You will also have to get a wiring harness adapter if you want to hook it up to the stock wiring. These kits are available at walmart and aren't very expensive. www.installdr.com usually has wiring diagrams and install instructions for most vehicles.
It isnt hard to install a radio, it just takes a few basic tools and some general electrical skills. IMHO the stereo shop charge way to much for installs on mst occasions.
Thanks Alabama Bronco,
I was just sketchy about the dash. Some cars I have done installs on you have to take apart the whole dash (2001 Civic)and I know the pre 2002 Fords mostly have the 4 hole radios (which is easy to get out). Well I'll give the dash a little tug and see what happens.
Mine was did not take a gentle pull at all. I had to yank it out. I didn't want to use a screw driver to pry it out cause I didn't want to make a crease in the surrounding area. I take mine off from the bottom first and I can usually work it out. I had to remove mine 3 times buts thats another story..........
Thanks for the tip.
How do the JL Audio XR-570 Csi sound? I ordered the CSI for the front and the CXI for the back. Can't wait to get it all hooked up.
I dont have them hooked up yet. I did do a test and they sound pretty good but until I get a replacement radio from ford I cant finish my install. You do need to remove the door panel. It's pretty easy to do. Look at previous post and you will see a post from Tempe on how to remove the door panel on a ranger. It's pretty much the same for the Explorer.
