Im looking for a good teardown of a steering box for a 65 F100 2wd. Ive searched the forums, and have not been able to find a decent set of tear down instructions with pictures. I thought I would just have a go at it, but Im lost on how to actually get the thing apart. I do not want to ruin what I have, so I need to take it apart without wrecking anything. Mine has no issues beyond leaking and I just want to replace the seals so it can be repainted.
If someone has the teardown instructions, preferably with pictures, please share. If not, please share where I can get a manual, preferably on CD. When Im done with the repair, I will post some pictures of how to take it apart, and put it back together.
Hi Corey. If you have the factory shop manual then you have the seal r&r instructions...to the best of my knowlege theres only 3 or 4 seals...but the biggy...and I think most common leak...is the pitman arm which you would need a special puller to remove and a good torque wrench to reinstall as well as large socket for the nut...IMO, I would have a shop do it...the seals are fairly easy to come by...plus if you have a shop do it, they can tell you if you need other parts replaced inside...i believe theres a couple of bearings and races that are common wear areas.
Any links on where I can get the shop manual, preferably on CD? I have the pitman arm puller and the 2 1/2" or 2 3/8" socket needed. (cant remember which socket it is )
Mine really doesnt have more than 3/4" slop in the steering wheel, so Im hoping that just replacing the seals will do it. If it needs more than that, I will cross that bridge when we get there.

To the best of my knowlege there's only 3 or 4 seals.
(sigh) 1965/72 F100/250 2WD & 1967/72 F350 with manual steering: There are only two seals:
C7OZ-3591-A (replaced B6A-3591-A) .. Sector Shaft Seal / Pitman Arm attaches to sector shaft.
B5S-3738-A .. Steering Shaft & Rack Seal.
1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 35.1, Page 2 (upper pic) shows the manual gearbox and all internal parts. Catalog available on a CD from hipoparts.com
Dave (garbz2) and "Squire" Don (cs65) have this catalog. Both borrowed my CD, burned copies. Don musta suffered a brain fart inre to his 3 or 4 seals malarky.

What in the world? Seals have nothing to do with slop (play) in the gearbox! Hell, 3/4" is nothing, I've seen some of these trucks with 6" of play in the gearbox.
Play (slop) in the gearbox caused by: Worn sector shaft and/or sector shaft bearings, worn steering shaft and rack and/or upper/lower bearings/cups.
Outside the gearbox: Worn draglink, inner/outer tie rods, king pins.
The mistake people make: They use 90 weight gear lube in the gearbox that was designed for steering gear grease! Gear lube causes the internal parts to wear out faster.
Jeff:
Thanks for the link for Red Head, but I will probably have to find someone local as shipping a 40lbs steering box across country is a bit pricey.

Yeah, my steering box is nice and tight, but it leaks like a sieve. I just need to replace the seals. I refuse to pay $250 and give up my good steering box as a core to get back some POS that Cardone cleaned up, put new seals and grease in it for $5, and slapped some paint on it.

CGB, you can rebuild the da*& thing yourself. I got the correct part numbers and POC's from ND for the cage bearings, sector shaft bushing, lower seal and as he said, the proper grease and rebuilt mine myself for less than half the price a reman would cost. I ordered and received the complete shop manual on CD for my 1965 f100 short bed from Detroit Iron.
