The aod is not a 2 position shift lever.
It's OD D 1
It has 2nd gear as well, you just shift from 1st to D and then quickly back to 1st at the shift point and it will hold 2nd gear. Or when downshifting from D to 1st, it will engine brake until slow enough to safely downshift without over revving the engine.
