I've been getting a message saying "CHECK COOLANT ADDITIVE" on my message center. I read the Diesel Supplement and it says 3 things, 2 are some kind of tests to do to check water purity, sulpher, PH levels of the water, the third thing is to add some Orange additive stuff. Just to keep things simple, what do others on here do if/when they get or got this message? I would think Ford is just trying to be complex or difficult here and a guy could just add some coolant into the resevoir. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
how old is the truck and how many miles on it? It could be at the miles that Ford recommends servicing/checking the coolant and the message is just a reminder to do that. The first thing I would do is buy a test kit and check the coolant to see if you need to add anything. The only diesels I have experience with are heavy duty trucks, but they are all basically the same and the extended life coolant on the large trucks needs to have a coolant extender added after a certain amount of miles to refresh the additives in the coolant.

It's a 2012, Diesel, with 12,000 miles on it. I checked both coolant reservoirs (it has a primary around the center right of the engine, and a secondary right in front of the radiator). The secondary one is in the good range, the primary is very low. I guess I'll just buy some of the recommended coolant (manual says to use MotorCraft Orange Coolant), fill it to recommendations, and see if the message goes away. I'll buy the coolant at a Ford dealership, so, worse case scenario I'll just ask a service advisor.
