Wire gauge

What is the best size cables to use for the starter system, from battery to solenoid, starter and ground? Would a gauge too big need more volts to get it to crank?

I believe the factory cables are 4 AWG. I had NAPA build some custom cables that are 1/0 AWG and they work fine.

Bigger the better.
I make my own from #1 welding cable and swage/solder/shrink copper ends to them.
Ground should be same size, you can't have too many.
I use copper antisieze on all the connections.

I was just wondering, to rule out all possibles. I do need to go through the diagram and make sure it's all correct. Thanks.

If you're of a mind to build your own, use welding cable in the appropriate size (I use #2). It has better insulation that takes higher temps and has many more individual wires which carry more amperage.

I've been thinking about relocating the battery, and was considering welding cable for the project. Where can welding cable be purchased? Internet sources?

You should not solder battery cable terminals. Battery cables put a decent amount of leverage on the terminal, which can break the joint. Crimping the cable instead allows it to flex; and this is how store-bought cables are built. The proper way to build battery cables is with a crimper designed just for that purpose.
