Ok im finally putting my truck back together.. my engine is in and now its time for the transmission.. its an automatic but ive been having a heck of a time... at first i had the flexplate in backward so after i got the transmission up and bolted on.. i tried turning the engine over by hand it wouldnt(OOPS).. so i got that flipped back around and i raised the tranny back up and got the bottom 4 bolts on the tranny on but noticed the torque converter studs are started through the flexplate but not quite through... should i be able to just grab it and shove it through? Im having a hard time getting it all the way through the flexplate. BTW this is the first tranny ive ever done.
You should be able to slide the torque converter forward to fully engage the studs into the flexplate.
If it won't slide forward I'd be VERY worried. If this happens what might have occurred was that you had the flexplate on in the correct orientation and the torque converter wasn't fully seated into the trans. If that is true then the pump and torque converter are damaged and won't work.
You put the spacer between the flexplate and the crank right? And you can't get the tc off the tranny? There's a little seal on there so you might need to give it a little tug. And just so I understand the tc studs are not going all the way through the holes in the flex plate? Is the tranny case flat against the engine?
yeah the spacer is between the flexplate and the crank. even with 4 bottom tranny bolts completely drawn up the studs are not completely through the flexplate. and i cannot pull the tc forward
Are you sure the flex plate isn't back words? I know it sounds stupid and you've changed it once already but I've never had the problem where the tc is too far away from the flex plate unless the flex plate is in backwards or you damaged the pump...
if you have the trans out of the truck and can not move the torque converter, it sounds like it was no properly seated into the pump and was force into it. if this is the case, you will need to pull the trans apart, and most likely have to replace the pump, and possible the torque converter.
well when i put the tranny on last time.. the tc went through it fine without me having to push it forwards at all but after everything got tightened up i tried turning the engine over by hand and it was completely solid.. couldnt turn it over at all.. im pretty sure its on correctly now.. this time that i put the tranny on the studs started through but i couldnt push the tc the rest of the way.
Sounds like the first time you didn't have the tc on all the way and when you flipped the flex plate you got the tc in right and now that it's in right the flex plate is backwards.

it sounds like you jammed the converter into the pump.
Hmm alright.. another question is.. is it ok to start theengine with no tranny behind it? I wanted to start it because i just did alot of work to it and now im gonna have to wait on a tranny.
