Istalled a new cps, truck still stalling. Went to autozone to pull codes - dio would not communicate with truck???
Going to replace the ipr today,
Why doesn't the code box communicate- we tried it 3 times, "unable to connect" message.
I would guess it is because most code readers will not work on our trucks. Just the way they are setup. Do a forum search for Texas Chapter and ask about forum guys with an AE, or a more sophisticated scan tool, like Snap On or others.
Unfortunatly I do not have one, yet.
The scanners from vatozone won't read the 7.3. You will need to find someone with a scanner, such as an AE (auto enginuity). Check out Tugly's link on one of his posts for the B.E.S.T. Map for someone close by you.
You might have a blown fuse for the power point/obd connector and that's why it wouldn't connect. Like others said though you need something like AE to read the majority of codes.
I have a 99 and put 3 different cps in it before I found one that worked right. I had to get the one from the dealership that they sell for the 97 which is different from the one they sell for the 99, so you may want to try that. Here is my post of when I was fighting this battle for you to read through, but long story short put the cps for the 97(from the dealership) in mine after a recommendation from people on this board. There is a link in that thread from one of the guys who responded about testing the cps the stealership sells for the 97.

That is the first I've heard of the 97 cps. Did the IPR valve this weekend, made it to work this am, but there is no rain. Going to see how the drive home works out 50% chance this evening. If I get a stall- I will head to the stealership and get a 97' CPS- 1000 thanks!!!!

A bad cps most likely will not 'stall' your truck.... it will kill it on the spot. Electrical interruption, truck goes down. The truck may start back up ok and run for awhile.
I have a SuperChip tuner and it can read the codes for our trucks.
I might have all my scenarios mixed up in my head, but didn't I read something about a combination of LED tail lights and wipers on stalling the truck?
Even if I'm wrong, did you make any changes to the truck at all recently... no matter how trivial it may seem?
As my dad used to say..."you're not holding your mouth right"...
Bet it's not the CPS. Check the other diesel common culprits like your IPC plug/connector for oil in it, monitor oil levels in the reservoir 1st thing in the morning pre-start, fuel pressure etc. Might even go deep on the weekend in a warm lighted place and pull the valve covers to check not only the connectors and/or do the mod, but buy the o-ring kit/s and change your injector o-rings and whatever else time & money will let you do while you got access. Syphon out the oil and pull the reservoir off and check your gasket screen (if the 99.5 has it?). Good opportunity to clean the thing out if nothing else.
Does it seem while at idle to slow down on rpm's then chug itself out? Or does it just die? Hear any hissing under the hood while at idle indicating possible vacume leak?

Parts store CPS have been known to pick up interference from the wipers and kill the truck.
THe rianing is what I would be looking at...
Check the backside of the fuse box under the dash and the GEM. Known issue for a leak to form at the top of the A pillar. This runs down the pillar and drops down to the fuse box and GEM causing all sorts of wierd issues.
Pull the fuse box & GEM and check the back for water marks and/or corrosion.

I haven't check the fuse box- but will do. Raining this evening for the ride home- so going to see if the rain makes a difference. If it does- I guess I have to move to Arizona!
