I replaced my injectors and glow plugs and controller about 5 months ago, the truck has started and run like a dream ever since, except for 2 times now and these happened months apart. 2 times now the glow plugs did not come on at all. when this happens the truck would not start, it must really like those glow plugs cause neither time was exceptionally cold out. both times i ran the battery down a little, then looked under the hood and tapped on whatever i could reach that was related to the glow plugs and the controller. then hooked up jumper cables and the glow plugs were working again and the truck started right up.
so what am i looking at?
what do i need to repair or replace?
and I am saying the glow plugs are not working because the light in the cab is not coming on, AND the truck is not its usual self cause usually it'll just fire right up.
thanks
and while i'm at it
i have a few drips.
we are moving to a new house that has a nice garage with concrete floor and a nice aggregate driveway, so i do not want this old truck making a mess of driveway or garage, i put some cardboard underneith to see where it was leaking and what it was leaking. it appears to be deisel, and appears to be passenger side and it appears to be geographically speaking on both sides of the fuel pump [not that the lines there are leaking, if i knew where the leaks were i would not be posting]. a couple drips close to the tire and a couple drips closer to the middle of the truck. all slightly in front of the axle.
i of course in my new garage with LIGHTS will tighten all fuel lines in that area and look for anything else that looks wet, but i thought i'd throw this out there in case there is a common leaking spot on these trucks that i should focus on.
thanks

and no need to say check your return lines, i know and i will.
has nobody ever come up with a good replacement for the reutrn lines on these trucks.
they have got to be the most frustrating part of owning these trucks.
air leaks, touch them and they start leaking. i was hoping to not ever have to touch them again until time to replace them, cause it seems once you touch them you make more porblems than you fix.
For the glow plugs, it could be the glow plug relay going bad, but usually it is not a hit or miss type problem. If it does it again, check to see if you have voltage on both of the large terminals when you first turn the key to heat the plugs. It is best to have a helper to turn the key, as you should get power to both for approx. 15 seconds depending on the air temps.
Can you hear the relay clicking, If it clicks fast with out stopping for a long time it could be the grond on the controler. Normally the relay will ingauge then click in and out for a short while.
As for the return lines I dope the o-rings with high tack gasket sealent. it's sticky stuff messy stuff but it seams to help keep the caps from leaking, and use the caps with the shorter nipples on them. But you always want to keep new orings in stock.
ok thanks for the replies.
yes i used viton o-rings when i replaced the fuel injectors.
and this controller clicks the glow plugs very little if any. but always starts right up
and the two times the plugs did not work, i am not convinced my tapping on things did anything, but i did have glow plugs when i got back in.
and tell me more about this weep hole, does it only weep if the pump is going bad, and as i said i will get into this in a couple weekend from now, tightening every fuel line that looks damp, with moving i don't have time to get into it, and with the old house we have an older blacktop driveway so i have never worried about the truck dripping a little. because it started well. although i appear to have small oil leaks under my valve covers i dont use oil to speak of??!
my other fluids maintain as i would expect. and prior to adding an electric fuel pump i always fought with fuel lines leaking air into the return lines which affected starting, but no more since the electric fuel pump, but that may mean i have leaks that are not bothersome to the truck starting, but are leaking small amounts of fuel.
i will let ya'll know how this progresses.
thanks
there is a weep hole in the mechanical fuel pump just like the water pump has. with the engine running if the pump is bad you will see fuel coming out of the hole.
where is your electric pump mounted, between the tank and the lift pump, or between the lift pump and fuel filter?
not really, but if the diaphragm leaks it will fill the crankcase up with fuel.
and on the same lines, it may be causing the leak through the weep hole.
few suggestions;
inspect/clean ground wire on GPC.
delphi install kit via amazon.
e-pump from member; GenLightening
remove and discard oem pump.block it off with plate and black rtv.
(i have instant starts.iv never tried my block heater.never had a gas engine start this easy.zero leak issues.it's what i know personally to work without hassles.)
the batt cables hook to the start relay, under this post is ware the fuseable link for Gp power is, may have bad conection at this point...if wait to start lite is intermitant, it is power related.
