I have a 98 f150 ex-cab, 4x4, lariat with the E code transmission. That is both the 4R100 and the E4OD. How can i tell exactly what i have without tearing the whole thing out of the truck? Thanks for any insight
I do believe in 1998 they used both the E4OD and the 4R100 in the F150. It was rare, but they did. The only problem is, i cant find anything that will tell me conclusively. I want to put a shift kit in this thing and get a higher capacity pan (which i know wont matter anyway) but im not sure what fluid to run. The 4r100 is updated and supposed to use Mercon V. The e4od says just Mercon... Which one is it?
The E4OD and 4r100 are the same unit.
The E4OD was made in two versions, one for the 5/5.7L and for the 4.6/5.4L as well as for the v6 motors of vintage.
The 4r100 has internal upgrades to handle more power as the years went by from 98 on with the new designation, otherwise is the same.
Today both transmissions use Mercon V because straight Mercon has been discontnued some years ago.
A deep pan is of no worthwhile advantage other than looks.
It delays inital fluid heating but there after provides little extra cooling once the fluid reaches an equalized temperature.
It's much better to install a large area aux fluid cooler in the return line for immediate cooling..
Good luck.
Look at a cooler over 12" or larger and preferably a 'stack fin' type.
Use lines the same size as what is being used stock.
The cooler lines go from the trans to the upper connection at the radiator and out the bottom to the cooler then back.
The fluid does not just drop back into the pan.
It cools and lubes other parts picking up heat before dropping back into the pan.
A larger pan will hold off OD longer until the fluid temp get about 98 degrees after a cold start then allows the PCM to engage OD..
My son has a 94 351 Lightening and has done the E4OD valve body mods.
Baumman and a few other companies provide some good shift kits.
Good luck.
