I recently purchased a 6.0l diesel for a work truck. It has 152,000 miles on it. The fuel gauge (while driving) bottomed out and stopped working and the engine light came on indicating "Low Fuel". I know there is 20 gals minimum in the tank. Is this the sending unit in the tank or is it possibly a fuse or somthing simple?
FWIW I just added a fuel level X-Gauge to my Scangauge II. It's on their web page, I added the CANSF version because I want to also use it to diagnose an issue with my car. It reads out fuel level in percentage of a full tank and there is a Ford specific version if your truck is before they went to CANSF. It would probably tell you if the computer is getting a good fuel level signal or if the dash is what is bad.
The CEL indicates its not a fuse issue, although that may be part of the problem. I think MC5C was trying to get at is you need to check the codes and see what the computer is trying to tell you. the gas guage and the CEL could be completely unrelated, and be a combo of a fuse (or numerous fuses).
run the CEL codes and let us know what you come up with. pull the fuse panel and check your fuses... all of them. most fuse sets come with the handy speed checker with an indicator light that tell you if their's continuity.
then come back with your findings well need some more info to help ya!

Reason: maybe the format will work this time
I had the same problem last summer plus a seeping of fuel
from the nut. I got a new gasket and the needed wrench.
When I took the nut off it was not on very tight. The sending unit
on my fuel pickup was covered in rust particles. I cleaned it and
reinstalled with new gasket. Problem has not come back.
When you clean look for grooving of the resistor and wiper.
Also clean the wiper contact point
Here is the sender resistor and a photo of the nut wrench
Here is the wrench by it's self. I bet you can make one easy.
Just one word of cation The plastic can be brittle form age and fuel. USE CARE
I have not yet had an opportunity to check the codes but...the gas gauge now works! However, of course, the check engine light remains on. Could this still be the sending unit perhaps?
That is the problem.
When you check the codes you will find a sender fault. Yes I am predicting and should be correct. If you do have
one that will recover you may be able to save it with a cleaning. I used cleaning swab dipped in rubbing
alcohol to clean the resistor and wiper tip. Work slowly to remove the plastic cover and don't pull on the
parts too much when you separate then clean the traces and then the wiper tip being careful to not
bend it too much. It's a good idea to replace the big O-ring and they are not very much I think $8.00 is
all I paid. If you do use the tool it goes on at some thing like 60 or 80 Ft/Lb I can check that if you need me to.
Also while you have the top off if you want to do the tank mod your in the right place to do it. I found that mine
had been done I guess that is why the nut was so loose.
What's the tank mod? My fuel gauge has stopped working about 3 times or so since December. No low fuel light though. No check engine lights. Usually if I shut mine off and turn the key back on itll work again. Not real concerned yet. I am curious about the tank mod though. Also I was told to use a pencil eraser on the sending unit. Like on slot cars and tracks lol.
My sender has a dead spot as well. Consistently, at 5/8 of a tank, the gauge drops to zero, and starts working again at about 1/2 tank. When it first happened, right after I bought the truck, used, the engine light came on. I would reset it, but it would continue to happen. Now, after a year of fill ups and witnessing it drop off at 5/8, I quit resetting the engine light, and have just lived with it. It looks like I would have to drop the tank to get to the sender (2005 F350 6.0L). It hasn't ticked me off enough to drop it yet.
Mines failed several times when I ran the tank low I dumped a few treatments of diesel 911 in there filled it up and never ran it low again it seems to have solved the problem until I can get at it. Ford dealer told me it wouldn't work until I replaced the sender but so far he was wrong.
