Fuel Gauge
My fuel sender is going out, it randomly shows full to empty. I know it is full as I dont go past 150 miles w/o filling up. My question is this, if gauge is showing empty (we know it`s full) will the ex run out of fuel? Make sense? I have a long trip planned and do not want to find out the hard way. Talking about the 03 EXC
Thanks, Happy Holidays!
So it has a chance of shutting down? I do not have a code reader for the Ex yet but as far as I know no codes are being thrown and cel light has never come on.
To start take a clean White Rag and wrap it around your finger. Then Swab the inside of your Fuel Fill Pipe. If it comes back Rusty Colored a closer inspection with a flash light is in order. If you find your Fill Pipe corroded like I did it's a simple matter to remove the pipe and clean it with a small wire wheel and a drill motor. Another hint would be if your Main Fuel Filter is looking Rusty Colored. If you find corrosion in your fill pipe it's a good bet your slider rod on the fuel level sender is also corroded.
I discovered the fix for this quite by accident. But first I'll tell of my conditions so you can compare you situation with mine. About a year ago my fuel gauge was zeroing out with about 3/4 of a tank of fuel left in it. My Low Fuel Warning on the dash would come on and my CEL would set as a P2067 or P2068( I can't remember which one, it's been to long ago).
I was faced with either replacing the sender unit for $350.00 or living with it!! I went so far as to drain the fuel tank and crawl under the truck to drop the tank but decided it was too much work and " why do today what you can put off till tomorrow".
So on to the simple Fix: I started using a fuel additive mixture on a regular basis. The mixture consists of 1 cup Diesel Kleen and 1 cup Super Tech 2 Stroke Engine Oil. Both are available at Walmart. I started to use this mixture to help Lube and quiet down the Injectors but surmised the mixture also lubed and cleaned the slider rod of the fuel level sender. I have not seen a reoccurrence of this problem in over a year now and my Fuel Gauge now works as it should.
A note of interest, the trucks computer is programed to detect a gradual fall of the Fuel Level in the tank. When the sender gets hung up or reaches an area where it can no longer report fuel level, and then suddenly breaks free or reaches an area where it can once again report fuel level the computer detects a drastic change in the fuel level and sets the CEL. I believe this is used to detect a Major Fuel Leak or a Ruptured Fuel Tank.
In closing I would like to wish all my Ford Brothers, Sisters, and their Loved Ones a Happy and Safe Holiday Season

at the top of the tank. So I got a new gasket and lifted the bed to get access.
Wehn i pulled the sender out I found rust on the sensor element. I cleaned that
with a Q-tip dipped in some rubbing alcohol . I replaced the gasket and torqued the
nut down (it was loose when I removed it) Rechecked the fuel levels and cleared
the code it had set and so far no more problems or leaking. That was over a year ago.

I RECENTLY GOT A 2003 F250 6.0 4X4... APARENTLY THE FUEL TANK IS OVER SIZE TO A 40 GAL... WHAT IS HAPPENING IS THAT 1/8 BEFORE THE FUEL GAUGE HITS THE EMPTY RED LINE THE TRUCK RUNS OUT OF DIESEL.
A FEW DAYS AGO I PUT A 3" LIFT INFRONT OF THE TRUCK TO LEVEL IT, ASSUMING AS WELL IT WAS GOING TO LEVEL THE FUEL TANK BLA BLA BLA LOL
WELL TODAY I DROVE AROUND TOWN HOPEING FOR THE FUEL GAUGE TO TOUCH THE RED LINE AND THE FUEL GAUGE LIGHT TO TURN ON; AND IT DIDN'T, I STILL RUN OUT OF DIESEL 1/8 BEFORE THE RED LINE AND THE LIGHT NEVER TURNED ON. (I CARRY EXTRA DIESEL IN A BOTTLE FOR THE "EMERGENCY") I DID HEAR LIKE 2 PR 3 BEEPS I'M ASSUMING IS THE LOW FUEL SOUND ALARM, BUT NO "CHECK GAUGE" LIGHT CAME ON AND THE FUEL GAUGE DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE RED ALL THE WAY.
ANY SUGGESTION. I'M ASSUMING BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS OWNER INSTALLED A BIGGER TANK, MAYBE HE LEFT THE STOCK PUMP AND SENDING UNIT AND IS NOT REACHING THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT? HELP PLEASE?
One thing loose the all CAPS. You don't need to YELL.
Could be any number of things going on and a harpoon
mod could be one of them. Ford has a 38 gal tank that if that
mod is done will hold that much.
