What is a good, inexpensive mig welder for patching body panels? I want something that is going to work properly and last a while without breaking the bank.
I have a Hobart Handler and it will do anything you need for bodywork ....but I really wish it power output was fully adjustable rather than only 4 settings.
Most all of the time no.1 is too little and sometimes no.2 is too much.
I just bought a Holbart 190. On the plus side, it will weld thicker metal on the farm, came with gauges, will turn down the same at the smaller ones. Negitive side it is a 220 not 110.
I have only used a stick so I have not done anything yet. In my looking at wire welders gas is a must for that real professional look and the metal needs to be clean.
Not much help, just my two cents.
I know old thread
But if you have not yet got a MIG look at the
Lincoln SP welders. You find the cheeper ones
at Home Depot. They also make one that has
a continuous variable feed and power setting.
If you can find one of the older SP-100 they are nice
I run a Lincoln 140 for body work and it does a fine job. Use the best wire you can get. Either Lincoln or Hobart. If was to do it again I'd get a Hobart 190 as it's a bit more versatile. For heavier frame work I use my trusty Hobart Stickmate ac/dc. They both get their tasks done really well.
After using the hobart 190, I love it. It will go as low as the 110 welder but higher for me to weld other items on the farm. I am not sure if it is the gas or practice but it is so smooth. I give it a A++.
Its nice to use good equipment. I can't say enough about buying quality welders. If properly cared for, your grand kids will be passing them down, and the quality of their welds is really a pleasure to work with.
