Hey guys im going to be installing an f650 dash and putting carling switches in but not to sure about how to power the lights in the switch when i turn my truck lights on. The only reason Im asking a question like this is because they are not the led models and Im not sure if they pull alot of amps since ill have 7 switches hooked up. Do you tap into the wire for gauges if you have them or do I need to tap power somewhere else and not have to worry about over loading the circuts.
The light in the switch is activated by the power going through the switch in the "on" position, it's a minimal amount of current to power the light. The ON-NONE-OFF type switches just have a third terminal on them to ground the light.
I'd imagine you would need special switches with a separate terminal for the lighting power source for it to come one only when the dash lights are on. The light blue wire with red trace behind the dimmer is the dimmer controlled power source that you'd need. I don't know if the switches you are referring to have this capability.
Carling switches (some of them) have 2 lights. One for night time illumination and one for indication that the switch is in the on position. The ON position light does not need to be wired in. For the night illumination lights you can wire them all together and then to the same circuit that the illumination feed is on for gauges, marker lights etc. They dont draw very much, so you should be able to piggy back it, but an inline fuse might not be a bad idea.
I do have the switches with two lights one for lighting of the actuator display and the other for when the switch is turned on. I was thinking of piggybacking them but my fear was that the oem wires were too thin and couldnt handle 7 switches. Since I already have gauges so i was going to just use the wire that feeds the gauges when my headlights swtich is on. what size fuse would you recommend?? 3 amp?
