I have a ’48 F4 with flathead V8 (8BA). It is cracked between the cylinder wall and one of the exhaust ports. An engine shop has looked at it and could possibly fix it with a sleeve and some pinning. No guarantee however. Somewhat $$$ also. The pressure test shows that the cooling system leaks into the exhaust port. The sleeve repair and some stop leak may do the trick, but I’d prefer a different option if one makes more sense. I haven’t been able to scrounge another block at this time. Do you have any leads for a complete engine or block. Another thought was to retrofit the truck with a newer engine. The truck has a hydraulic lift so I would kind of like to keep the transmission with PTO. On the other hand, if I converted to an engine and an automatic transmission combination, others in my family would have a better chance of driving it. What engine/transmission swaps have others done that have worked well. I would like to avoid cutting into the firewall or altering major parts of the truck if I do a conversion. Any ideas or leads would be appreciated. Thanks.
I agree with you, I wouldnt spend any more money on that block; its toast.
Ive got a block thats been tanked and magnafluxed is a good rebuildable block. my friend that did it also has a rebuilt one in his shop thats ready to go that would also work for you. he has been rebuilding these engines for a long time. let me know if you need more info, send me a pm or email.
thanks
