Mercon V ATF wasn't available when these trucks rolled out of the assembly line, but it is supposed to work everywhere Mercon ATF was used, just don't mix both products.
i put some valoline maxlife high milage ATF in it, and my truck shifts abit smoother but when i down shift from 3rd to 2nd it grinds, it did this before but i hoped new fluid would make it better, double clutching doesn't help, whats this sound like?

Well, would you look at that, a manual that takes ATF.

Yes you can definetly get new syncros, but you'll have to have the whole gearbox apart, do some googleing on walktroughs, and if you're unsure i'd have a workshop do it.
And by then it's probably cheaper to get another second-hand unit. But then you never know what sort of nick that'd be in either.....
