Hey guys, it's been a while.....A few months ago, I attempted to refresh my Bendix gearbox on my '69 F250, but never could test it as I needed a new center link. Well, I finally got one, and now that it's all back together, not only do I have fluid leaking out of a weep hole, but it won't turn to the left, and when I try to turn it to the right, it makes a loud pop like it skips over a gear or something and still doesn't turn....any ideas? Also, I couldn't remember, does the pitman arm have a master spline so it only goes on one way, or is it possible I forgot to set the pitman arm up so that it's in the middle of the gearbox's turning limit?
I'd say the spline is keyed to fit only one way, been about 6 yrs since I had mine off and replaced the box.
I've only had one box apart about 12 yrs ago(64 Galaxie), so can't say for sure about getting them together properly. Did you get the preload adjustment set properly?
I couldn't find anything on how to set it, so I've tried adjusting the thing about 15 different times, and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between any of them
The old bendix boxes always had problems leaking and whatnot. From what I hear, theyre just a downright pain. If you do keep having problems...maybe look into redhead steering boxes. Theyll rebuild yours or you can even buy one from them.
They fix all the leak spots on them and seal them good and replace the leaky non existent bearings.

Twodifferent types of P/S were used in 1969, so are you sure your truck has Bendix P/S?

Screwing it down should tighten the lash up(slop in the steering wheel). Getting it too tight will just wear things out prematurely(at least that is what has been told to me).
With the box out on the bench, you should be able to feel the slop between the input/out. Adjusting the screw down til it is just about zero is correct. I guess if it's mounted on the truck, wiggle(rotate) the input side and see how much it has before output moves(it really shouldn't if hooked up). Easiest if you unhook the rag joint so you can feel it with the weight of the steering wheel.
thanks guys....numberdummy, I could've sworn it was like m96001 and later for the saginaw boxes, but once again, I bet I'm wrong. regardless, I found a shop close to me that says they rebuild all sorts of power steering boxes, so I'm going to pull it and take it to them....hopefully they'll be able to tell me where I went wrong
Dysfunction8, I'll bet that shop doesn't rebuild that steering box the way it NEEDS to be rebuilt. Ask them if they machine the pitman arm end to hold a bearing and seal and not JUST a seal. Bill (ND) will air in on this fact and set you up with a company that does. Do it that way, I'll lay odds you will never have to mess with it again.
The overall plan was to get it running, and then sell this thing, as I really don't need another project since my 1987 Mustang with a 351C and Toploader is my main project, but as the time goes on, I keep seeing a need for myself to have the truck.....I'll ask them about machining the pitman arm end for the bearing....they are a full on restoration/resto mod shop, so who knows what they do
