The steering gear on my 80' F100 is leaking p/s fluid where the pitman arm connects. I've ordered a new seal(it should be here tomorrow) but my Chilton book gives little clues on how to install it. Any ideas?
Mine started gushing after I hit a curb. I got a whole rebuilt box and replaced the whole thing. I am glad I did because it steers so much better now, and it doesn't leak either.
It'll likely just leak again in a short time, it's more than likely wore out and the shaft is moving around.

I was going to say the same thing. As a rule when they start leaking it is a sign the box is wore out. What I did was add Lucas Trans Stop Leak until I finally put in a rebuilt box. A few years back CarQuest Auto Parts sold the best rebuilds.
After you remove the pitman arm and the snap ring that holds the seal in, start the truck and turn the wheel to full lock, the pressure will pop the old seal out. Be sure to put a drainpan under it!
