I think the 7.3 can handle it if it is spayed while the engine is turning over given the engine is designed to handle 400 lbs compression & 20-30 lbs of boost . Especially since ether has so little octane . I understand the concern of the GP's being on .
I'm thinking worse case , air filter intake fire if the key is on while the ether is sprayed ...(intake valve open ) exhaust valve open should be no concern. The engine cannot run backwards (or try) if the valves are open .
Thoughts ?....
Does anyone have any personal experience of actual damage to the engine ?
Back before I had learned what little knowledge I've gained about these trucks, I used ether to get it to fire a couple times. The last time I ever used it I got the dreaded sonic boom out of the intake. No damage to report. All compression came back at 380-400 psi and the truck runs great.
I personally don't think ether can destroy a 7.3 unless you go crazy spraying it. Now I do think any diesel can get addicted to ether if constantly used.
I blew up the intake box on mine several years ago. After that I used gas on a rag laying over the air filter. And when I had bad GP's I just pulled the air filter and put the wife blow dryer in the intake for a few mins and it fire rite up.

thats an intake air heater if I ever heard of one.
I have heard that befor Mike. But how does it become addicted?
I'm not sure but the shop I wirked at in high school had a Detroit 671 that went two years with our the intake heater and constantly had ether shot in it and after they finally fix the heaters we still had to hit it with ether
I've only used ether on a PSD one time, but it was very sparingly, and on an engine that we weren't sure was all that good anyway, and there was no damage. On the other hand, the red/black '97 I bought, the stock air box looked like a grenade went off in it. The guy I bought the truck from said after the trans went out and they parked it, it had sat for a while and his brother-in-law was trying to get it started with ether and apparently used quite a bit of it, cause it blew that air box all to he!! LOL!!
I also think that if you spray ether with key off then try to start the engine will burn of the ether before the GP get hot enough to lite the ether. If you ever test a GP with a pair if jumper cables you'll notice it take a couple seconds for it to get hot.

I think gas is worse , it has more octane .. I don't believe that an engine can get addicted to it for a second. If the motor is shot it will always need it ,for no other reason ...I would love to have someone explain how the motor can become addicted ...
I have a 70's version of a case 350 .. it always needed starting fluid . warm or cold weather .. The starter crapped out on it & after it was replaced , it never needed starting fluid ..
