I've always been against it because of pre det with glow plugs.
People have been doing it for years without issue.
But of course, just as anything, doing it in moderation is important.
I should have pointed out this post was refering to IH tractors with IH engines and they DID NOT have GP's. but because the OP was asking about wear on the engine I didnt put that in my original post.
Ether with GP's is a bad idea but can be done as long as you spray it before you ever even turn the key to let the GP's heat. when I did it on the 97 i shot it, then jumped in and turned the key. you also need to make sure you keep cranking then engine until the ether is used up otherwise when you let off the key it can still backfire into the intake.
I think the engine will run backwards if the starter spins it backwards. one time while i was in the army, i was driving a deuce and my foot slipped off the clutch the engine almost died but i was able to stab the clutch and just save it. well it must have been at TDC when i caught it because it came back to life running backwards. the only way I could get it to go forwards was to put it in reverse. I had 1 forward gear and 4 reverse. lol craziest thing i ever seen happen. fix was simple just kill the engine and restart. Ive never had to use ether on my stroker. but those army trucks, some of em had ether dispensers built into the engine.
OT
Did the same thing kinda with a kabota brush hogging one day going up a hill lugged down and died on me. i was just going to roll it back down and restart it never pushed the clutch in and the dang thing started running backward's and picking up speed. scared the crap out of me. after that i started doing it when i'd change oil and let it run for about 10 to 15 sec to get all the oil into the pan.
I'm suddenly more interested in this engine running backwards thing. I can see how ether and the 7.3 could be bad (spraying while cranking should solve most of that issue). I've seen engines "addicted to ether". They had poor compression. Don't know if that was due to ether, or some other reason. I'm guessing some other reason.
I have never heard of an engine starting up and running backwards, yet we have two stories of it happening here. Anyone else heard of this?
It would be easy to try to make a stroker run backwards. seems to me if you set up on top of a hill with a manual trans stick it in reverse, push the clutch, get it rolling downhil and let the clutch out it will turn the motor backwards. wether or not it will actually fire is another question.

my old huskvarna wr250 once in a while would runbackwards. THAT thing was lethal to shoes, boots, whatever was on your feet. When it kicked back it hurt! I mean to the point of cringing when you kicked it just knowing it was gonna bite back. It would runbackwards and you wouldnt know it till you droped the hammer and it drove the fuel tank into your junk. I watched my buddy that I sold it to drive him nuts first back down into a creep in mid january...YOU talk about funny...sorry for the derail...good story though.

It certainly can happen. We had a 3208 cat in a Ford beet truck start smoking out of the air cleaner.

This is a new thing to me too. But your scenario I dont think would work. One time i had my batteries die on me and I had my buddies push it down the hill, in reverse. I popped the clutch and it fired right up, no problems. And it wasnt running backwards lol. Because when you put it in reverse it has othing to do with which way the crank is turning, obviously, so putting it in reverse wouldnt do anything.
Not to mention that if it did work, youd probably need some new driveline parts and/or a tranny after going from rolling backwards 5-10 mph to pop the clutch to going forward in your reverse gear lol.
Our truck probably wont do it. because the injectors fire off the oil pressure. and running backward's would take oil away from them.
most all 2 stroke's will do it. it's like the golf cart's that are 2 stroke. there starter will start them foward and backward's.

You'd have to put it in the opposite gear direction.
