block heater

maybe there is no generic answer for this, but i'm wondering how long you all normally plug your block heater in when using it? this is my first winter with this van, and i'm in upstate ny. probably averages 20 at night this winter. i feel like i used to plug it in just for 20 minutes and would be good but recently have been having to do it for an hour and the results still aren't awesome. is there a way to check it?

You need about 2-3 hours to get it warm, these rigs hold a lot of coolant. The best solution is to have a timer that turns it on several hours before you need to use the vehicle. I plug mine in just before I go to bed at night. I plan on getting a timer eventually.

On mine, 20 minutes wouldn't do much. At 20º mine would take at least an hour or two. I like to be able to feel warmth at the valve cover...
I'm in the foothills outside of Denver, and plow snow in the winter. I often have to start up at 0º or below. I like to have it plugged if for several hours at those times...

At 20degrees you shouldnt need the heater so I would be checking the glow plugs, that said takes 2-3 hours without a lot of wind to warm it up.
