The dreaded "water in fuel" indicator is on! I'm traveling an hour south of me in the blizzard and the WIF indicator goes on. I immediately pull over and crawl under the truck to find the wiring to the sensor disconnected!!!(I just had Ford service the vehicle Monday!) I plug it back in and no change. After 50 miles or so the truck goes into reduced power mode. I get home and ride out the storm. After cleaning up the snow I get under the truck and disconnect, clean, and re-install connector on the sensor. Drain fuel from bowl.....not a drop of water. Restart truck...still no change. I know theres no water but now what?
I'm not an expert yet, but my guess is that once the truck has set the WIF DTC code and went into reduced power it is going to have to be reset. You can pull the battery cables off for a bit and clear the codes. But that is not going to fix the problem. The truck should start and run fine until it sets the code again and that might be right away also. It sounds like the sensor has gone bad. Also pulling the battery cables also clears the freeze frame codes that Ford would like to see for trouble shooting the problem.
It's up to you if you need the truck this weekend pull the battery cable and try it if you can get buy without it take it back to Ford on Monday.
I'd pull the battery cable(s), step on the brake to drain the system and see if it resets the code. Sounds like your WIF sensor got caked in snow and set the code. If it comes back take 'er to the dealer.
I sincerely hope you do not have a CP4 HPFP failure down the road...after my debacle, Ford made sure any WIF incidents were forever caught in the non-eraseable memory of the trucks computer...remember, they demanded that I proved I did not have a WIF light, all the time knowing there was no way to prove that point...now you will have to prove that you never had any water in your fuel when your truck swears that it did...

I hope not! I called the dealer from the side of the road and gave the service manager a piece of my mind. I sealed the fuel I took out of the bowl this morning in a container just in case....not that it means anything. I'm wondering if the disconnected wiring causes a "sensor missing" or "sensor out-of-range" code first?
As soon as that wire came disconected. It sets a CEL. They may not haf it clipped on. Till snow pulled it off. Id go talk to service manager anf get it resolved.

The service advisor I spoke to this morning said the sensor does not set a CEL. The CEL never came on....just the WIF and REP indicators.
To the best of my recollection...any trucks that have been re-flashed after September 2010 have coding inserted into the non-erasable memory that retains a flag that the WIF indicator has been activated...
Unless Ford has changed it's policy, all HPFP failures require a FSE approval (or more likely, disapproval) before any repairs can be made under warranty. it will be tough to hide the WIF indicator evidence...especially if you are not fortunate enough to break down close to home...

Hopefully...you will never have to find out...

I already informed the dealer that I want it in writing or my lawyer will be contacting them.
Why the worry? The WIF indicator is mentioned in the owners manual, and under normal circumstances is a normal part of the way the truck is supposed to run. It simply indicates that the fuel/water separator is doing its job. Of course in this case it is completely meaningless. So why the worry?

But would it really matter Rick? I mean...there was no evidence that your WIF light ever came on and they still denied your warranty claim. Even if the WIF light never set do you think they would cover the repair if they determine there is evidence of water damage?

seriously...with the track record Ford has concerning HPFP failures and warranty coverage denials...a WIF warning locked into the computer will fly the red flag instantly

again...the record speaks for itself...Ford has a published policy regarding any HPFP failure...they needed no reason to not warranty my truck other than a dealership battle and politics...does anyone think Ford would fix anything they could weasel out of warranty coverage...and you are right...they would not fix any truck that shows even the smallest indicator of water infiltration...and they are still the only CP4 series pump user who does not fix their trucks...
