I have a '84 Bronco and before I redid all the ignition wiring when I turned off the key the engine would stay running for about 6 seconds and then turn off. Now when I turn off the key and turn off a switch about 6-8 seconds later I here a click sound that comes from under and about center of the dash. And sometimes it clicks on and off in rapid secession kind of like when you flip a light switch on and off quickly. Some days it does it and some days it don't.
If I leave the battery hooked up then it drains the battery overnight or within a day, and sometimes its just fine. So to be safe I unhook the battery whenever its not being driven or started periodically.
Im wondering what is in the center of the dash that needs power and that controls the ignition stuff?
It would be hard to guess what's clicking. It sounds like your re-wiring job was not a success. What is your plan to fix it? I am assuming you put manual switches on it instead of using the original ignition switch?
It has been doing the clicking thing long before I rewired the ignition. At least for the past couple years and has progressively been getting worse. The ignition switch still turns on everything as before except for the ignition box and coil is now powered by the manual switch that's hardwired in.
That almost sounds like a previous owner installed some sort of relay with a timer to delay the engine shutting off (highly unrecommended), and now it's having issues. I'm not sure what you mean by "turn off the key and turn off a switch"; it's ambiguous as to which switch you are talking about.
I isolated the ignition power from the rest of the vehicle's wiring because I was having trouble with it randomly dying going down the road. So I rewired the ignition system so instead of the DSII module and coil getting power when the key is in the "run" position, it now gets power from a switch that's hardwired in directly to battery positive. The truck still turns over with the key in the start position but now the switch I hardwired in has to be on in order to start and run. Then to turn the truck off turn the hardwired switch off and turn the key off to turn everything else off.
Most of the time now when the key is turned to the off position after being turned on 6-8 seconds later I hear a click sound under the dash. And occasionally it clicks in rapid secession. Mind you it has been doing this long before I rewired the ignition.
When I had the original 300 in before I put this 302 in it never did that clicking noise.
We had a 86 Tuarus that did that. It was the Fuel Pump time delay switch. It finally cooked the fuel pump. What this switch did was pre-started the fuel pump before the ignition was turned far enough to crank the engine. It would shut off the fuel pump, after a few seconds if the engine wasn't cranked over. Also it would turn the fuel pump off after the ignition was turned off. I found it by going to to Manual Reset Collision switch and tracing the wires back.
