Distributor Question

FTE Family,

So, the tired, old 272 is out of my 1956 F-350 wrecker, and the 292 is being prepped to install. The distributor shaft is smaller, and shaped differently on the 272. The 292 was given to me, and is a Fred Jones rebuilt, supposedly from a 1957 Mercury. (I pulled it from a 1959 B-600.)

Sorry for the confusion. I have looked up rotors for both engines, and different part numbers are shown, as well as different numbers for a complete distributor.

Money is tight, but I do NOT want to make a mistake, so any input will be appreciated. I will look for part numbers on the two distributors tomorrow. (The truck is in a friend's shop, about ten miles from me.)

Thanks in advance,

The 54 239's and 256's had a tang drive for the distributor. It was a heavy shaft with like a screwdriver blade on each end. The 55 and up engines had a 5/16" hex drive. The 54's had a 13 tooth gear, the others have a 14 tooth gear. Dennis

Shaft

P.P,

Thanks for your response. To be more clear, it is the shaft end in the distributor that I am speaking of.

I'm still not clear. Are you looking inside the distributor, or is the distributor out and you are looking at the end of the shaft? If you are looking inside, the 57 and up distributors used a different cap and rotor. Dennis

Cap

Dennis,

Both distributors are still in the respective engines, so my concern is where the rotor mounts. You have answered my question, and I do appreciate it!

Opps did I see 1957 Mercury that would be only two offered, a 312 and
368. So I could be you are dealing with a 312 which looks the same.
