Anyone have any info on these? I need better gas mileage out of my highboy and a c6 auto 3spd at 3300 rps at 70 mph isnt exactly doing it rolling on 35's with who know what gearing.lol Talked to the guys at GV and he said it would help my MPG noticably. Has anyone ever used them? He says its true Overdrive?
I don't have one yet for my highboy, and you will notice some improvement because of the RPM drop, but I wouldn't expect a big savings compared to what those units cost. For our application it's over $3000 for the unit and adapter. That's why many people take that $3000 and find a small car that gets 25-30 MPG to see some real savings vs just saving pennies at a time. An overdrive would save some wear and tear on your engine from running such high RPMs, but I think it would take a long time to pay for the unit with the little savings you'd see compared to the savings of a small car, but many can't have 2 or 3 vehicles and rely on their trucks for daily drivers. I do think another FTE member is getting 20 MPG with his 2wd truck with a stroker, but it's a 2wd and higher geared as well. Really, I wish those OD units weren't so dang expensive or I'd have one just to let me drive a little faster without running high RPMs.
If you end up getting one, I'd like to know how it does because I have yet to see someone get one for a 4x4 let along a highboy, so I'd would be very curious. The good thing is, those OD units are supposed to be a good unit and will hold up. Plus they are a more or less a bolt on unit and not something that you'd have to do fabrication too like a ZF5 swap or trying a E40D swap.

Yea another car for me isnt an option. No where to put it and to much for insurence and stuff as it is. Im taking the truck out to them soon so they can look at it and im going to see if i can get anywhere on price cuz yes i agree the price tag is insane! I could buy a whole dent for $3k. Im still juggling it around but it would be nice to see if anyone else had done it on a highboy.
Had one on my 96 F350 4x4/cc/7.3/ZF5/4.10's I know, apples and oranges, but it got 21-22 mpg empty running 67 mph. The big thing as stated, is your return on investment, 3g's is A LOT of gas, and a 390 with a 4bbl aint gonna be turned into a gas sipper anytime soon! I agree that I think your best bet would be to find a cheap commuter car, or some other alternative. The biggest reason nobody has done it, is the upfront cost, and the long time to make it viable.

Yea exactly. But I have 6 Ford trucks in the yard with a camper, a boat, and a trailer with the ATV's haha. No room for any other vehicals. And seeing im getting like 8mpg with gas at 4 something. It wouldnt take long to pay it off in a year or so. Basicaly it would pay its self off in about 34 trips to the gas station with an average of filling up with 24 gallons about. I do 1 or two trips a week. Its killing me
keep in mind theres more to it than engine revs. These trucks are heavy, wind resistance is like a brick through molasses. Carbs arent nearly as efficient as fuel injection, etc..

Ya know, I thought the same on another car until I did it. I used to daily drive a 1993 Bronco, got about 11mpg, went through expensive tires like crazy and front brakes in less than 10k miles. Then I went to a Ford Contour and now a Focus. Triple the gas mileage. $300 on tires every 80k miles, never done brakes. Even with insuring another vehicle I probably save $500 per month. But I guess if theres absolutely no where to put it, theres not much you can do about that.
If you are doing the gear venders to save money I'd just stick with what you have. It will probabaly take a very, very long time until the unit pays for itself and you see any savings.
I think the cheapest way to drop some revs on the highway is find some axles from a 77.5 to 79 F-250/350 with 3.54 gears. You have 4.10s now unless someone swapped them. Or you could just do a gear swap too. Or theres also a ZF 5 speed unless you don't want a manual transmission, edit never mind, I was thinking 460.
