Hi guys i have a 1951 ford truck and the flathead v8 was turning over by hand by pushing the fan blades but now it wont turn over the starter wants to crank it but wont any tricks on how to unsieze these engines thank you
Did anything happen to I to cause it to lock up? Like running it W/O oil or water. If not and like it turned over by hand then you cranked it with the starter and now it is locked up. I would suspect the starter drive is jammed. Remove the starter & then try to turn it with the fan. If it is still locked then it is time to soak the cylinders with Marvel mystery oil or a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. Remove plugs and squirt some in each cylinder & let sit overnight. Repeat if necessary. If that doesn't do it then a tear down is in order. Good luck.
Before you pull the starter - MAKE SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF - put the truck in 1st or Rev and rock the truck back and forth a few time then check if it turns over - If not see above.
Pull all the plugs. You could have a leaky head gasket, allowing coolant into the combustion chamber, thus hydrolocking the engine. Do not force anything. Try turning the engine with the plugs out and we'll go from there.
Dit it turn all the way around befor it stopped, if so, try going back the other way. It may have a valve thats stuck, or some rust in the upper part of a cyl, best to not force anthing till you see whats keeping it from turning.
