1987 F250

Hey, sorry to put you guys through this again, but I got a new job thats like 6miles from my house(10 minutes) so i can afford any truck now. I found a 1987 F250 xlt lariat extended cab diesel with 97,000 original miles. He wants 1800 obo. Heres the craigslist link,1987 f-250
I was just wondering if theres anything i should look for if i look at it, Is it a good deal, is the 6.9l a good motor, and I know its a stupid question hows the mpg on this rig. Sorry again guys.

Not bad at all for the price. I would want some kind of assurance that it is, in fact, 97k miles and not 197k miles.

Find out what trans. the truck has. If it is a C6 it's going to be a hog on fuel for sure.

If it runs good, drives good, and the body is at least as good as it looks in those poor quality pics, then thats a pretty good deal.

Just remember, not only is diesel fuel more expensive, but the maintenance costs will be about double that of a gas truck. If you're going to buy it, make sure you've got money to throw at it when needed. Do you really need a Diesel? I know it's cool to own one, but hardly worth the added cost if you're not using it.

The C6 isn't a bad thing at all. It's strong and dependable. But that tells me that the truck you are looking at is absolutely built to pull. And not built with fuel economy in mind.

Again, I don't recommend buying a diesel unless you are gonna use it for what it's built for. If you're using it to go 6 miles to work and 6 miles home, and occasionally a couple miles to a buddy's house, etc. Then look for a gasser. Absolutely look for a gasser.

Thats probably all I would really do maybe once and awhile tow a heavy load. I have a gasser in mind as well. I just thought for the same price maybe i should get a diesel. How bad is the mpg.

If you're looking for a first truck in that price range, I'd check on these, to name a couple in your area:

1994 FORD TRUCK F150 4x4
1996 f150

That 6.9 w/ a C6 will probably give you 10-12mpg, and that's probably on the high side.

The 1/2 ton gas trucks (even the 4.9L) won't give you much more, but again, gasoline is cheaper and maintenance is a fraction of diesel repair.

Depending on where you live, if it gets cold that diesel will never warm up during your 6 mile drive to work. Diesels need to be driven and under load to get up to operating temperature, and constantly running them cold is asking for condensation and leaks to form. Factor in that the injectors and return lines are getting up there in age (if they haven't been replaced yet), the cost of batteries, etc. That said, the IDI trucks are a good way to get your feet wet in the diesel world.

Unless you need the pulling power, a gas truck might be fine for what you intend to do with it. 3/4 ton and larger truck parts are more costly as well.

With any of these trucks you look at, always make sure the ball joints are good. If not, use it as serious negotiating leverage, since they are a labor-intensive job to replace.

FWIW, the term "original miles" irks me to no end. When are miles not original? Nobody will ever admit to rolling back an odometer. *End rant*.

As stated by others diesels are more expensive than gasoline trucks. If you're looking to buy something for a short drive, I'd look at a gas truck. The F150s listed above are good, but if you really want something for towing, don't overlook the 351 and 460 gas F250/350s. If you want to preserve any fuel mileage, look for a 92+ with the E4OD automatic or any year with the ZF5 manual. Fuel economy will be in the 9-13 mpg range with either transmission and engine depending on gear ratios, but they'll start easier in the cold and warm up quicker. Also, the 460 was the highest horsepower truck until the Powerstroke was introduced in 95, so a 460 will pull just as well as the 6.9 IDI but with a bigger hit in fuel economy and it'll have to be a little higher in the RPM band to do it.

460 will get you 11-12 mpg if you're driving it like a sane person, while the 351 might squeak out 15-17 depending on how big of a truck it's in. My F250 sits at a solid 14-15mpg highway.

My 460 '95 with E4OD and 3.55s averages around 12 mpg.

My parts truck was a '88 460 with 4.10, C6 and a GearVendor OD (and a heavy service body). In OD it got around 10, and without the GV unit it averaged 8.5

My wife's grandpa had a 93 F150, 351, E4OD, and 4.10 gears and it manged only about 14 highway.
