Clusters are very vehicle specific. Go by the part number on it. Excursions could only have three possible clusters I think- gas, 7.3, or 6.0. But the trucks could have gas manual trans, gas auto trans, 7.3 manual trans, 7.3 auto trans, 6.0 manual trans, and 6.0 auto trans. That's just for '02 to '04 (+ '05 Excursion) style. Part number is important because there were software changes or something to the same version of the cluster. I'm not sure what the difference is, but I've been looking for one for my conversion project and found a couple different part numbers for the same type of cluster (7.3 auto).
No, I don't believe an '05 F-series cluster will work without extensive wiring modifications.
The 05 Super Duty cluster will not work on the EX, on manual trucks the tranny temp is replaced by a Volt gauge. You need to find a 6.0 cluster, either from a 03-04 SD Auto trans or 03-05 EX. When you swap them your mileage will reflect that of the cluster, not the truck. When buying from the dealer, you will need to give them the VIN, mileage and your old cluster. Expect a 3-4 day downtime and a 600.00 adventure.

If I were the adventureous type would it be possible to modify the wiring harness to accept a 05 diesel automatic super duty cluster? I've found a direct replacement but I really would like to convert if it is reasonably possible. Both the Super Duty cluster and the Excursion cluster are the same price.
I think it could be done but would probably require a donor SD wiring harness. I know the wiring is also different in the ex vs SD. With enough ambition anything can be done!

I believe it has been discussed before, IIRC:
Dash will not work...
You have to have electronic modules
reprogrammed and? New wire harness? Since
the boost gauge is not on the old style dash.
Lots of folks, myself included, would like to
do the upgrade if it was figured out by somebody!!
Ok. Here's what happened. It turns out that my cluster is fine. The problem was a corroded courtesy lamp socket on the running board. The lamp broke and shorted out blowing the fuse. It took out my interior lamps, power windows, instrument cluster and radio. Apparently the instrument cluster fuse controls a lot of other stuff as well.
They moved the accessory delay module into the cluster in 02 eliminating the GEM module. I think they kept that setup through 04 on the SD and 05 Ex's. I went through all this when helping another user, He has no power accessories, windows, locks and radio for almost 30 minutes! Since the ACC delay module is built in the cluster unfortunately, if it ever goes bad its a pain to get a cluster from the dealer! Im glad it was a simple fix!
