Hard start question

Just finished doing HG's, arp's, updated stand pipes and dummy plugs, updated STC fitting, Blue spring. Just fired it up and it runs good. The problem is if I shut it off and re start it right away it fires right up. If it sits then it cranks for a long time before starting. I am thinking that oil is draining out of somewhere and has to crank long enough to refill. Just wondering if anyone has a good place to start. all in all the repairs/ upgrades went very well. The hard start is my only problem to chase down. I put a Fram oil filter in, but it is the OEM one. I was kind of wondering if the bypass under the filter would cause this problem.

2005 F250 4x4 6.0. 63,000 miles.

I just started it. I was watching the OP gauge and as soon as it starts moving it fires right up.

What oil filter did you use? Hopefully a racor or Ford product. If Racor, maybe, for whatever reason, the oil is not staying in the filter and is draining out making it so you have to fill it each time you start.

OK - now go to what I have highlighted..... for some reason it sounds like the oil is draining out into the oil pan.

Running for only 15 minutes and driving it for only 5 miles is far from enough to prime the high pressure oil system back up, even more so on a major repair like this. I would say drive it at least another 20 miles, doing LOTS of heavy wide open throttle accelerations and you will be good to go.

ok. will do the driving. is it common to have a hard start condition after a repair like this? I will drive it 150 miles tomorrow if needed. As for the oil draining out of the filter, It is harder to start then it would be after an oil change.

And thanks for the replies and Ideas.

Your question is an extremely common one asked after a repair like this. For this reason, when injectors were replaced or any part of the high pressure oil system was "opened up" for whatever reason while under warranty, I used to request authorization from the customer to drive the vehicle home for a night after the repair. This is just so I could avoid having to hear "Ever since you......"

ok. I REALLY appreciate the feedback. it eases my mind a little. I am new to 6.0 motor work. I have had the truck for 8 years with little to no problems until the EGR cooler went out. I think this motor is better then my buddies with 7.3's. I have had less problems then they have. Just the 6.0 problems seems to cost more.. a lot more!!!

Update:

m-chan68 you were correct. It fired right up this morning after a few seconds of cranking. thanks again for the great advice. I was ready to tear into it and look for bad O rings etc. For future reference, is there a better way to burp the system? I filled the oil through the filter housing. Other then that I haven't found any other advice for a quicker start up.

one more comment just because... I buttoned up a small exhaust leak today, added the elc and did an oil change with Shell Rotella and a Motorcraft filter. I cant remember the last time this truck ran this good. All the updates, and repairs made it like new again. Thanks for all the good info on the FTE site. I am going back to reading now!!
Darin.
