I flush the cooler with brake cleaner and compressed air. Also the auto parts store sells a cooler flush kit so I hear.

For the Trans, I put about 5 or 6 quarts in start the engine and move the shifter through the gears, shut it off, add 2-4 more quarts, start engine and repeat this until Trans is full. Should take 22-24 qts for a 4x4. Big thing is to not let it run too long with no oil. Don't really know if it will hurt anything just something I was told to do years ago and it hasn't failed me.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Do I need to put any in the converter before installing it?

I poured a quart in the converter and 8 quarts in the Trans before I fired it up. Jacked up the rear wheels cycled it threw all the gears set the truck down checked the fluid added 1/2 quart until it was where I wanted it. Went for a ride checked it again and was good to go

I have drained my TC before when changing fluid. Like John said, put 8 or so in the tranny, run it through the gears (not driving) check, repeat.

What I was planning on doing for flushing the cooler was to find some rubber hose that fits on the cooler lines and use compressed air to blow them out into a bucket. Then attach a length of hose to one line and raise it up with a funnel and pour in quart of fresh fluid, then blow it through the lines. Repeat a couple times until the fluid is clean.
