Hey guys. Some time down the road I'd like to get a 351w for my 84 F150. I already have a 302.
I've been tossing around the idea of stroking it. Whether it be a 383, 393, or 408. Eventual plans for the truck are to trail ride it with occasional mudding.
Whats you're opinons on which kit to get for my needs, and other parts that might go with it? Don't be afraid to say "Dont bother stroking it", because I was thinking the 351 would be upgrade enough with the right parts. Thanks!
Yes... a 351 alone is a hugh upgrade from a 302, just to give you an idea my truck was 3 seconds faster 0-60 with a 5.8 in it, the bigger Windsor makes more torque at 2000rpm than the 5.0 makes anywhere and torque is what moves a truck.
Find yourself a '94+ 5.8 donor motor to get the factory roller cam setup, swap on a better set of heads, 4bbl intake and carb and a little more cam, and you won't be able to grind the ear to ear grin off your face. Depending upon the heads you use it's no problem at all to get something like 350hp/400tq out of this combo which won't have any problem throwing mud in the air. Now if you're dead set on doing a stroker that's fine, no need for a forged rotating assembly if you keep it under 5500rpm a cast assembly is fine, and the final displacement doesn't matter just use a 4" stroke kit and whatever oversize pistons the block needs. This combo will need heads with larger chambers to keep compression within an acceptable range for pump gas so you have to go all in on this and do it from the start, otherwise you may end up with something that really isn't daily driver friendly.
I was thinking for money's sake, just do a rebuild on any 351w I come across. A roller would be nice.
For the intake, I was planning on a Weiand Stealth intake, stock Holley 4180, with Comp Cams Xtreme 4x4. I'm currently undecided on which heads to use. Stock heads ported or aluminum aftermarket ones are what I'm thinking about.
Unless you're a professional porter with a flow bench you won't make significant gains on the stock heads, as a reference appropriately sized heads for a 351 flow twice as much as the stock castings while you can only expect to make a 10-15% improvement hand porting, so you'll get far better results with just about any aftermarket head.
In the interest of saving money, if you get a late model roller cam block, there is a very good chance that the short block will be usable without rebuilding.
