Hey guys. I spend a lot of time in the forum for my truck, but I was just enlisted by a friend of mine to put his 302 from his 69 Mustang back together. I know he has a edlebrock cam and a weiand intake. Everything else internal is stock. Anyone have any suggestions on where I should look for a few extra ponies while putting this back together? I do have some 351w heads laying around, but I'm concerned the bigger combustion chamber will offset the gain of a slightly larger valves.
Not sure what the cc's are the 351 heads but if it's over 64 I would just get a set of GT-40 heads, and I have also heard that the E7TE (something like that) heads are good as well. I'm still young and not sure of what works well and what doesn't. Are yall on a budget or what aare you trying to accomplish with the build
First of all what 302 does he have in there, a windsor or boss? If it's a windsor then the stock heads are better than just about anything later except maybe some GT40p's, but if its a boss then those heads would be a serious downgrade even if they did work with the intake...which they won't. The cam is something that could use upgrading I'm sure, Ford never did put a really big cam in any motor.
No, not a boss! LOL, just a 302 "windsor". I've come to learn that the only true windsor is the 351, just my 2cents.
Anyway. This is a tight budget. It was a good running engine when removed for some restoration. He bought the cam a while ago. It's a performer not a performer rpm. He's not planning on buying to many upgrades. I have a set of 351w heads I thought of using, until I read about the difference in CC size.
I've got new rings and bearings. It'll get a new high volume oil pump. The Edelbrock performer cam, weiand intake. I'm going to gasket match the ports.
There's not to many variables, but I'm just looking for some good tips for the rebuild. Anything I can do, or cheap add ons, that I may have missed.
If installing new bearings have the crank and rods checked out and machined as necessary, it would be a shame to spend the time and $$ rebuilding the motor and have it seize up in 1000mi because the rods weren't resized. And if you're going to break out the die grinder give the heads a cleanup too... particularly the exhaust ports.
Sounds like bassically have same engine. Installed a 70 Torino 302 in 65 F100 and ran great for some 30 plus years. Few years back had it rebuilt and upgraded cam to accomodate 4v Holley and placed it on an edlebrook performer. Kept the stock heads and had hardened seats installed. It's been 1 heck of a daily driver, work horse, and reliable truck for past 40 yrs. Sometimes regret upgrading, that stock 2bbl carb and intake had lots of get up and go, can only do so much with 65 T18 transmission and stock rearend. Also installed electronic Ign. don't know if as important than it was with the 'hog' of a 390. U might try going to CarCraft magazine online 'tech' section, seem to recall couple articles on '302' engine buildup' and possibly get some pointers.
