First off, let me start by saying I'm new here, Ive been doing a lot of research and reading on the boards. Ive found a lot of good information regarding my issues, but there's still somethings that I haven't been able to pin down.
I recently just purchased a 03 F250 4x4 SuperCab. 5.4L, roughly 113k on it.
The problem at hand, when in drive, and I step on the gas the truck makes sort of a gargling/skrew being shaken in a can type sound when it accelerates and at shift points. Now when the truck is in P or N, and the engine is rev'd up, the sound is not there, the engine sounds normal. Ive read a few threads of a similar sound and the OP saying they hear the sound on either the driver or passenger side,(IWE Actuator) for me it sounds like its coming more from the center region of the truck.
And also, I dont do any hauling myself, but I did notice on old service records in the truck that the four wheel drive had been repaired, as the original owner seemed to not know the limits of the truck.
EDIT: Could locking my hubs tell me if the sound was coming from the iwe. Is it safe to drive continuously with the hubs locked?
My vote is for the inspection plate on the bell housing of the trans. Pull it off (2 bolts), take a test drive, see if it goes away.... There's a wicked vibration on some of them that hits around 1800rpm.
If it does, throw some double sided 3m tape on it and bolt it back on.
EDIT - I was just thinking, my 2000 had some welds pop on the exhausts heat shields, caused a similar pinging/loose bolts in a can type sound. I cut 'em all off at that point...
