help me understand Shift on fly
I have a 2001 F250 4x4. It seems like the 4 wheel drive is not engaging now.
The truck has 54,000 miles on it. The hubs are in AUTO mode and when I select 4-HI- I hear a soft sound (not the usual loud thump) and I am getting no power to front wheels. I tried to move the hubs manually to LOCK but I cannot budge them. What could be the cause and how much is this going to run me?? I don't have the time right now to work on this myself. (I am not confident I can fix it)
I know that when I try to engage mine and I'm outside of the stated parameters, I worried that I was gonna tear something up....that was done for me on one of my old Rangers (thanks, oldest son!) so I'm damn careful in the King Ranch.
The first (and worse in my opinion) is the automatic hubs. They are junk. You should replace them with a good quality aftermarket MANUAL hub. It isn't a very hard job, instructions with great pictures for this modification are available in the tech folder.
The second is the motor system that acutally engages the 4H or 4L. Seems that these fail on a regular basis. Replacements are avaailable at most parts stores and I hear on ebay.
Check the vacuum hoses for leaks.
Usually the ESOF system hardly ever "clunks" really loud anyway.
