Had a misfire, pulled code replace #5 coil pack, rest code still ran like crap, new code after repair called for crank sensor to be replaced. Replaced and reset still ran like crap. Pulled new code (P0174 bank 1 lean). I talked with a certified tech from ford who told me it was the forward O2 sensor, replaced that reset code still ran like crap, new code (P0174 bank 2 lean). read on this forum about the MAF sensor. Pulled the sensor and cleaned, still ran like crap. Disconnected the MAF and the truck would barely run. More research points to a vacuum leak and it appears it could be a host of things. Is there a good place to start the search on this?
Anywhere on top of engine where hoses or rubber parts are present and involve vacuum.
Your certifed Ford tech sure ran you astray with his reccomendation to change an OX sensor to fix a vacuum leak.
Good luck..
Not to defend the certified guy as I am out 85$ and 90 minutes of my life but there was also a P0113 code as well with the P0174 when he advised that. It was a bank 1 that has switch over to the bank 2 now.
Thanks for the information. Is there any type of good technique to use to find a leak. First time dealing with a vacuum leak. Thanks again.
Code 113 is the intake air temp sensor.
An open circuit detected.
For the air leak, there is a 'smoke' test that can be done looking for where the smoke is escapeing.
A recent issue like yours came about when a new intake manifold was installed.
An O ring seal was left off a fitting.
Bottom line is trust the codes are telling what the problem is no matter what the cause is.
Good luck.
171- 174--- i would guess a vacuum hose leak. Your truck is over 10 years old. Hoses get hot, crack, burn... Good place to start is the two 1/4 inch vacuum hoses on the EGR above the drivers side valve cover.
