I was checking my v.a. on my distributor. I noticed it begins to advance at about 900 rpm. Is that normal? I have an Isky 256 cam, with power band from 1500 rpm up.

If it's running on ported vacuum, it should begin advancing just as you start opening the throttle plates. The mechanical advance should advance it further as RPM increases.

If you have an adjustable canister you can tune the vacuum advance for optimum performance, otherwise, a non-adjustable canister has a preset amount of advance built in, typically anywhere from 8-15 degrees.
