Cool 302 Performance upgrades?

I have a 95 Bronco with a 5L 302.

What performance upgrades do you all recommend to gain HP and speed? Any chip mods? Are they worth it?

I have added Ford Motorsport Headers, 3" exhaust from Headers back (high flow Y pipe and a single HF cat with Flowmaster series 40, single out), and have a K&N FIPK. What else can help me get more performance short of redoing the engine. I only have 43000 miles and have just broken it in. Thanks for the insight.

302 Performance upgrades?

You may get a bunch of replies or either numerous ones telling you to search the forum. Form what I read here, there are different ignition modifications that seem to help as well as larger throttle body for more air in, good plugs, wires, distributor and coil etc... Sorry for no specifics but I can't speak for the ones that have done the mods. I personally just replaced my distributor, module, wires, plugs and set timing to about 11 degrees and my 89 has not run this good and strong in probably 10 years. I am totally impressed. It has 239,000 miles and the only engine work I have done is the timing chain and sprockets.

Hope this helps,

You could always supercharge if you want a large amount of hp added. I am sure there are kits for your application. If not, you could always have a custom job done.

302 Performance upgrades?

Hi lmbauer, your question is very open. First off, you need to find out what your states "pollution' controls are. If you don't have any, everything is wide open. (except for federal things) If you are running "off road", every thing is available.
Next is your budget. Got bucks? The general "rule of thumb" is $100 per horse.
So, start by getting rid of the heads, and putting in deep breathers. Ford Racing, Edelbrock and others make heads for fuel injection. Get a new intake manifold, same ideas.
DOn't put a supercharger on until you have rebuilt the engine. You have a '95, which means it has more then 20,000 miles on it. You could blow the heads off. Supering a used engine is delicate.
Change the cam to one that is more "aggressive"
OK, you get the idea.
You've already done the outside of the engine. Now you need to go inside. And that takes parts and work. Which means dollars.

Big Red's right, to make power, you have to be able to move some air. The stock heads are very restrictive, so a change to something with higher performance capabilities is a good place to start.

With a '95 you have the mass air already, so you are wide open to what you can do to it. Just by changing the heads and cam, you will not even know it's the same motor.

"Short of redoing the engine"....get more air in the front (top)! By your original post, you already have the exhaust (bottom) part squared away and that will see a certain amount of improvement. But to see even more gains without tearing down heads and pulling the cam, try improving airflow IN to the engine. A larger throttle body, high performance injectors, fuel regulator, Edelbrock makes a really nice EFI intake manifold for the 302 and 351 EFI truck engines but, even the swap of the paper air filter for a K&N or similar high flow air filter will help. When you improve the air coming IN as you have improved the air moving OUT, you will see another significant performance gain. According to the manufacurers of these components you should be able to run stock fuel injectors but once you have all the air moving through the truck, you may want to improve fuel delivery as well via a performance chip, highflow injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

These suggestions are merely my humble opinions. I am personally planning the type of improvements I have already mentioned and like you, I only have the exhaust portion done at this point.

re:You have a '95, which means it has more then 20,000 miles on it.
---------------------------------
Although not always true, a worn engine will fail as it is only as strong as its weakest link....

You could blow the heads off.
---------------------------------
unless the factory guys didn't torque the heads down, he may be right....
the head gaskets will probably go if the rings or pistons don't crack first.

Supercharging is a way to "force" airflow into your engine....as is turbo charging and Nitrous oxide (of which supercharging is best option for forced air)

A good way to add ponies is to get them better flowing heads, Ford racing makes some GT40 heads (I have some ported GT40X heads on mine) with the stock intake ported and port matched to the heads)

Your MAF setup should compensate the fuel curve for added airflow.

as far as the truck 5.0 intake, you can swap in a mustang 5.0 intake with
throttle body etc for added power (bang for the buck)

New larger injectors will also be a must to add fuel capacity.

So other good power adding area is the exhaust, Bassani, JBA headers or porting your exh manifolds help.....then a nice Y pipe and a flowmaster muffler will add to the flowing abilities.

A shift kit will also help transfer the added power to the rear wheels. Trans go is the way to go here.

YOu can avoid having to add a new cam in by improving the rocker ratio...
It will give you a bi more lift while leaving duration and lobe separation stock.
(check valve to piston clearance before going too crazy)

Add some roller rockers to rediuce friction and valvetrain heat. Roller rockers also help your valve guides live longer by cutting down on valve side loading.

All the mild upgrades will add up.

enjoy.
