Has anyone installed the Wal-Mart brand "LIBERATOR" tire on their Excursion. They are rated D and E so that part is no problem. They also come as big as 285's.
They carry a 40K warranty and run 30-50% of what a Good Year or Michelin run.
Reminds me of a saying about motorcycle helmets, "If you've got a $20.00 head..." It's a lot cheaper to buy the Goodyears (or whatever) now, than to buy the Wal-Marts now and the Goodyears in 3 months. Whatever gives you peace of mind. You might try to find out where those things are made, see if they have a website, etc.
A few years ago, I was in a bind to get a hold or a set of 33 inch M/T for the weekend. I ran to my local Dobbs (in St. Louis) and was checking out their tires, and they also have a private brand called Cordovan. They had a set of 33 x 12.5 mud terrain tires for $110, and they ranked right up there with BFG M/T's. I was surprised they did that well, considering the private brand and all, but they worked great. Don't knock those private brands all the time...sometimes they're an added bonus...
I have not installed them on my x but have them on my 2000 f-150 and have had great results. Had goodyear's from the factory before and like the liberators much better. When my firestones wear out I am going to try them on my x. Also I believe they are made by Cooper Tires.
I don't know if you consider Cooper a knock off brand, but I've got a few friends who swear by their Mud Brute's. They perform really well as an A/T and last quite a while.
My son bought "Continentals" from Wal-Mart and had nothing but problems. I think the main problem (other than "out of round" on 2 of 4) was the knowledge and experiance of the folks @ Wal-Mart. Made a believer out of him, he went to Discount Tires & bought Yokohamas and is very pleased.
My father has the Michellin LTX's that lasted him 66, 000 miles with regular rotation and balance. I am in the business and these are the best tires out there for ride quality and endurance of tire.
I cast my vote for the Michelin LTX as well. I just installed a set of 285s on my X. Had a set on my Suburban that lasted for darn close to 100k miles and still had a little life in them when I traded it. I swear by Michelin, even if they cost more (which is debatable).
