So I've been having the same symptoms as what happens with the newer models when the solenoids go bad, the banging and grinding. The temporary fix with those is to disconnect the vacuum line to the solenoids. On the '03 the vacuum line doesn't go to each up like the newer models, instead going to the actuator on the transfer case. So my question is, how do I diagnose the grinding problem as it relates to the newer models?

Reason: Vehicle Info
Don't try to relate to some other system.
Learn how yours works.
If the grinding comes from the front axle, the splined sleeve is faulty, does not slide far enough, and or the axle shafts it slides onto to lock up the front may be part of the problem..
Leave the vacuum hoses alone and don't try to use 4wd until you solve the issue.
The actuator is pulled either in when 4H or 4L is requested or pulled out when turn back the 2wd.
If the grinding is in the trans then that's a different issue.
Good luck.
I wasn't trying to relate per se, just using the symptoms associated with the solenoid and/or vacuum leak from those model years. What I hear is identical to their symptoms of the bad solenoid / vacuum leak. It happens in 2wd with no rhyme or reason, and there is no pattern to when it might happen.
your truck has absolutely nothing in common with the wheel engagement solenoids on the newer trucks. It would not have the same symptoms. It might have a "grind", but not the same reasons.
State your problem. You have a grinding noise in 2 wheel drive... where ? Does it happen all the time ? Does the noise increase when MPH increases ? Is it a wheel bearing? Does it change when 4 x 4 is engaged ? The vacuum or lack of it has nothing to do with an older style truck "grinding".
There ya go; in 2wd has nothing to do with 4wd, vacuum, solenoids or the front drive unless some one has mixed hoses up. Then it would still not be a 4wd issue.
To post as you did just brought all this on.
Now describe as much as you can what, when and where the noise is produced.
All gears, all speeds, round curves etc.
Good luck.
