Over the past year, the heater blower would intermittantly not run. When it did run, all fan speed settings worked normally, and the A/C compressor would function normally. Gradually, the times when the fan would fail to work became more common, and now it does not run at all. I have removed the fan motor and tested it by applying 12 volts from the battery, and it works fine. I suspect a relay switch has failed. Where do I look for it? Any other trouble shooting advice would be appreciated.
Well, on the trucks with A/C, there is no relay that I can find in the diagrams. The first thing I would look at is a dirty ground connection to the motor, if the motor mounts in a plastic housing. If cleaning the ground doesn't help, then I would look at the blower resistor assembly. I don't know where it is on a van, but it will look like a large plug with about 4 wires going into it. It will be mounted to the air duct somewhere, either under the hood or under the dash. On the other side of this plug will be a flat phenolic looking piece. Take it out of the plenum and you will see what looks like a bunch of wire springs mounted to the phenolic. These are the resistor wires, and maybe some of them burnt in two. They are mounted in the air stream of the blower to keep them cool. The one for slow speed gets red hot.
my truck did that and it turned out to be a bad ingition switch. I had to giggle the key switch to make the fan work. Or anything else for that matter.
