I am the owner of a '01 f250 7.3 powerstroke. Just recently the 4x4 will not work. The lights turn on the dash when i click it in and the transfer case engages, but the 4x4 will not work, neither front tires will spin in snow and if i lock the hubs in and drive it makes a realll ugly noise going down the road.. Any suggestions? and also I was wondering about buying a stage 2 ats transmission and comments about that?
If you Get a racket when 'locked' i'd Hazard a guess at a bad hub. Failing that it doesn't get much better.... Likely blown spider gears in front dif.
Someone with more experience may have a better idea.
Good luck
if it was only the drivers side, wouldnt the passengers side tire spin??
Nope, remember that your front axle has the same type of hypoid differential that your rear axle does. Meaning that torque is equalized between the shafts, and with one shaft not being connected to the wheel the torque is going to be very small.
You will have no power to the front wheels unless both hubs are working and locked.

That's close, but it means what's actually happening is that all the torque is being transmitted to the shaft that has the least amount of resistance (which is why they invented limited slip and lockers). Either way, the end result is the same, as stated: "You will have no power to the front wheels unless both hubs are working and locked."
