2012 4x4 grinding then bang

lately, I've been getting a grinding noise followed by a banging in the drivetrain of my truck. it doesn't seem to happen when i first leave the driveway, but if I make a stop, shutting down the truck for 10 minutes or so, when I go to leave again, it will start to make a grinding, sometimes sounds like a ratcheting noise, then it bangs, then all seems ok.

the truck has almost 100k miles on it. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the vacuum lock outs, but I hate to start throwing parts at it.

has anyone experienced this issue?

Are you in 4x4 or 2x4 when this happens? What position are the hubs in...auto or lock?

I had similar sounds right before a locking hub exploded. Needle bearings in the hub were dry and came apart and jammed up.

I had this happen a couple weeks ago, after going through a car wash. I blamed it on that, and cold weather....I figued if i went through the jet dry, plus parked where the sun would hit it, that would help with any freeze up...We have had warmer weather lately, and it hasnt acted up since.

If you haven’t serviced the auto hubs I would suggest doing so even it’s not related to the noise.

I finally found the correct o-rings on RockAuto.com and plan to service mine this week.

thanks for the replies, it doesn' seem to happen in the warmer weather...

when you say service the hubs, what does that entail? I found the kit on rock auto with the gasket and a couple orings.

The vacuum is applied to disengage the hubs. When the vehicle is shut down, I believe the hubs are likely to engage, but upon startup, vacuum is applied and they disengage. The ratchet sound is hesitation in this action. I guess you have a minor vacuum leak, either from a hub seal or line..
