hey guys i have seem to have encountered a problem with my 1986 bronco 4.9 automatic 4wd, well the flywheel blew apart and cracked the block so i bought a 1986 4.9 junkyard long block then rebuilt the whole thing from the ground up(i have been building engines for over 4 years) the problem im having is i dropped the new motor in hooked up all the electrical and smog crap and ive double checked all the electronics and vacuum's all hooked up right i dropped the dist in timing set and this car just wont fire ive got spark i got fuel good compression in the cylinders and air thats why im at a loss it just wont run is the computer not letting it run is there something i didnt rest any ideas guys im at a loss
i keep setting the timing to dot by the book and it wont run so i got it warm and ware it can run and tried to drive it i had to power brake it to keep it form dying and as soon as it hits higher rpms it just falls apart but i can throw it in park and rev the hell out of it and its fine but it wont stay running in drive and as soon as it gets cold i have to keep messing with it till it warms up and if i have the time set really advanced when its cold and keep it like that when it heats up it starts having little back fires and pops idk is there any other things with the timing im doing wrong cause ill unplug the single wire spout start the truck throw the timing light on it set it at 10 + tdc shut it off plug in the spout and the truck wont even start
yeah im pretty mechanically inclined ive ruled out the basics im getting good fuel awesome compression great spark im almost wondering if the computer has finally crapped out like ill get the engine warm with the spout disconnected while in park revs up nice runs good if i try to drive it it will just run like crap now if i plug the spout back in while the cars running it almost dies and its starts having lil bck fires and other weird stuff like the timing is way off these 80s smog and ecu stuff is not my cup of tea Ive had a few others look at it and say mechanically ive hit the nail on the head maybe the computer is changing the timing or i have to sync up the computer with the timing i build old Cadillac so i was posting in here to see if there's some odd way of setting the timing that i my have missed thats why its doing this
i would still check the pressure. it has a small window that it will run in and if your fuel pump is wearing out or like mine had a hole in the rubber hose in the tank that hooked the fuel pump to the hard line, then the pressure could be to low and making it run like crap. its a cheap thing to check b4 you drop $100+ on a ecu that cant be returned.
i checked the fuel pressure and that was fine so it just so weird so i think im gonna drop in a new distributor and then if no change then the ecu the ecu i can get a new one for 80 and a 60 core
