can't set base timing

I have an 86 f150 efi302. Im tryin to check/adjust the timing. With the spout connected it seems to be 20ish btdc. Whenever I disconnect the spout to check/adjust the timing the motor dies. If i leave the spout disconnected and try to start it, it just spins and no spark. I need some help on this one.

thanks everyone.

It must be so far off, it won't run. Twist the dist clockwise a little bit till you can take the plug loose and it will still run.
