weird timing issues with 4.9
ok so i got a 1986 Bronco 4.9 well i swapped out the engine after the other one threw a rod so i rebuilt a long block and dropped it in and hooked everything up btw im in California so i have all the lame smog crap anyway so im trying to set the timing and i unhooked the single wire spout and to start it i had to advance the timing so far its basically on the compression stroke so then as it heats up i can retard it till its running nice and good i turn off the truck plug the spout in and the truck wont run right it dies out and it doesn't wanna start unless i advance the timing a lot again with the wire hooked up so after messing with it i can get it to start idel in park with it all hooked up when its warm i rev it up the motor is dying at the top end and if i let it cool off i have to repeat the processi got everything smog and electrical wise hooked up right is there something im missing any ideas guy im at a total loss

What was the timing set at with the SPOUT out, engine cold?

i havent thrown the light on it when its been cold cause i have to advance it so far its fireing on the compression stroke almost to start the i jump out while its idling and roll it back by hand till i can get it running smother then ive been timing it after i remember when we first hit it with the light the mark was at like 7 o'clock and the marks are up around 10:30 11 o'clock its just odd
