Hello everyone, I just bought a 2000 ranger 4x4 with the 3.0L and since its my first pickup im kinda exited to start playing with it. I wish I had the 4.0 but I really got a good deal. Anyways, being the person I am, im going to want to start making some mods to it to get the best performance out of it. What sugestions do you guys have? I have been looking at diablo chips and MAF sensors. Do they really make a noticeable diffence?
My suggestion would be to start with the basics. Since the oilable filters have been discredited as of late, I would start with exhaust. A good free flow exhaust will show instant impact. I doubt that putting a diablo chip in a stock truck would have a great impact for the money. That howver is opinion. As far as teh MAF, again I think you whouldstat at the bottom and work up. As long as you keep that MAF and throttle body clean you will have great throttle response. You should really check out the related articles in this forum. Yep, that's right!
And I agree with saint's comments about improving performance. You should probably think about a a better exhaust system, first.
Also, if you run out of things to read in this forum you can try looking through the Ranger Forum where 3.0L performance mods have been previously discussed on several occasions.
Finally, here is a link to a webpage that is dedicated to the Ranger 3.0L. A lot of the mods described on the site I wouldn't try on my own motor, but there is some very interesting material to look through, nevertheless:
The 3.0 is really restricted as far as breathability. Get rid of the 50mm throttle body. Go with a mod shaft bbk 56mm or try to fab up a 60mm throttle body adapter. That in and of itself made a world of difference. If you want to go deeper, get a set of junkyard heads and do a gasket match port and polish. Camcraft has some good cam profiles too, if you have the coin. He can regrind your stock cam or cut one on a brand new billet ($$$$). Headers and exhaust, and you will be tearing the tranny out of it before you know it...

Definitely one of its limitations. (If you think the Ranger 3.0L air intake setup is wimpy, take a look sometime at how punky it is the Taurus and Sables ).
BTW, you can also get performance chips at the FTE Online Store.
You guys also might want to check out the Computer Tuning Forum. Always lot of chip talk going on over there!
