Replacing gear shift collar

*Edit* don't be a dummy like me and release the pins on the harness and pull the wires through the column
The only way that I could figure to remove the blinker/hazard/horn assembly was to remove the connector under the dash and pull the wire so I had room to get it off. Make sure your wires have a way to match them back up.

Buy some connectors

and heat shrink for later

this is the back side of the shift collar note the notch inside. There is nothing wrong with this one but since I already got the new one I will use the new one.

This is the shift tube or whatever it is called. Look at the hole and the weld marks. A piece fell off as I was pulling the shift collar off and I was like "wtf" was that thank god it fell I'm the floor board and not down the tube. Be careful when you pull off the collar.

This is the piece that fell off and it was tack welded to the shift tube this is what sit in the notch in the shift collar this allows you to turn the shift tube and put into drive reverse ect. I have to weld this back on the tube. I guess I will have to drill out the two oval notches and weld there because there is no room to have a weld bead along the sides and front of the piece. I will try to take pictures of that process as soon as I get some gas for my welder.
Looks as if you went ahead and cut the wiring. There is another (recommended) method. When you unplug the wiring you can take a red piece out of the connector. This allows you access to push-pins that release the individual wires from the plug. You use the wiring to pull a string or small gauge wire up through the column. Replace the switch, then use the pulled wire to pull the new wiring back down the column. Re-attach wires to the plug, then plug back into the harness. It's not all that hard to do, and eliminates the possibility of bad connections due to splices in the wiring.
In the later large columns you don't have to fish the wiring through the column, just on the pre-78s.

To reinstall them just push the wire back in until the finger locks it in place then reinstall the red wedge.
A couple of things, make a chart of which wire goes where and tie a strong piece of string or wire to the end of the wiring so when you pull it through the column you can use the wire to pull it back through.
