If I remember right some buddy else had this problem and his lifters were completely pumped up. He collapsed them reset valves and all was good. Did you pump them up my hand with oil or just install them. Sounds funny but that's what I heard.

I had them pumped up by hand and the valves hit the pistons. I then took 2 apart and put in some shims till I had zero lash and the. Checked clearance. I get .035 on exh and around the same on intakes. I am not to worried about intakes hitting. I just don't like how little clearance on exh.

This is a old thread... You need to install your lifters without pumping them up. They will adjust to the correct length when you start the engine. The lifter piston will take up the slack in the assembly and the check valve plate under the push rod socket will keep it there. This engine has no room for pumped up lifters during install. they are to slow to un pump on there own and will cause bent push rods.

I realized that when I check them with lifters pumped up. But I also check with a solid lifter at 0 lash. And exh zalve is .035 away from kissing the piston. This seems WAY to close for an exh valve.

The exhaust valve is closing as the piston is on the up stroke approaching TDC. the exhaust valve hits the seat about 13* Before TDC. Its recessed in the head about .060 to .065 so that's close but not close enough to hit if the lifter is at the correct height. remember the hydraulic lifter uses the first bit of lift to cushion the lifting of the valve and squirt a tiny amount of oil into the push rod to the rocker's. so testing at zero lash will result in a tighter clearance measurement.
