All you guys were very helpful last year when I was having troubles/learning the right way to do something. I am in the middle of a motor rebuild and I wanted to make sure I was headed down the right road. I have been good up untill the timing set. I have only ever installed one before and that was 3 years ago.
Heres what I did (200 inline) :
Set #1 piston to TDC of compressin/fire stroke ( both valves closed )
slid timing gear on the crank
Rotated the cam so the dowel pin lines up with the gear, and making sure both dots line up.
The question is this: The dots should line up on the compression stroke (TDC) of the #1 piston... right?
Ok I am starting to worry myself now.... I was putting the cam cover on and with the piston sitting at TDC It looked like the cam gear was off by a tooth....I put the head back on, now I don't really have a good way to make sure the #1 is at TDC. Is there a good way to check with the head on? Or should I got back up to the auto parts store and buy a head gasket?
The oil slinger has an arrow that points to the dot on the cam once it slides on to the crank, and that did not look like it was a tooth off.... maybe I am good?
Sorry for the post, I am just worried I am going to mess this up.

Shine a light down the sparkplug hole, slowly rotate the crank until you see the piston rise to the top and just start to go back down. Back off a hair. TDC.
